yup. A rega planar 3 sells used for about $500 and they are plentiful. P2 is a little cheaper ($300 used) and still ok (way better than the cheapies). Sure something like an LP12 will set you back, but the sound is great once everything is set up properly. The build of the older or higher end equipment is just not there in the budget stuff of today. Vinyl is definitely an "enthusiast" thing, kind of like owning an older saab, there is a little tinkering, but for the right person, it is a lot of fun.
Main thing is to take good care of the vinyl one has and not chuck it in the trash. Much of it is long out of production and never to come back!
Also note that one does not need a USB turntable to transcribe vinyl to portable formats (like FLAC or MP3 etc)... just do the digital recording on your computer! The converters in most computers are probably not vastly worse than those in a cheap USB turntable anyway (obviously if one has a better ADC, use it, but computer sound has generally improved to at least be reasonable for this purpose, particularly if you compress files). Actually, the biggest factor with transcribing a vinyl collection would be your time. Those USB turntables really don't make much sense in that context, at least to me!
Just wanted to add, there are numerous decent external ADC/DAC setups you can buy for computers that are pretty decent (better than in the computer) - typically USB. A properly set up P3 (or LP12) through one of those would be sooo much better than the USB turntables! Much better use of one's time imho.
