Working in the dynamometer lab. My job was to install automatic transmissions on test stands and then monitor the automated tests for signs of things coming apart - literally. Installing engines in the test stands was secondary to the trannys, but I had the chance to tear down numerous failed engines to just a bunch of loose parts. Nothing like this to see how everything fits together in an engine!
These engines were run so hard that the cast iron manifolds glowed so red they almost became translucent. The larger V8 engines used water cooled marine manifolds on the exhausts but the smaller 4-cylinders had no such aftermarket parts available.
Years later I had to re-design the underground exhaust scavenging system that served the dynamometers. The extra-heavy schedule 80 pipes had collapsed/melted due to the heat of the exhaust gasses they contained, and the exterior of these pipes was so hot the sand back-fill around the pipes had turned to glass. Insufficient use of expansion fittings had caused lots of broken welds and failed anchor bolts. The original designer under-estimated the HP output of the engines which would be installed. A high powered small displacement engine produces lots of heat when run to failure at wide open throttle, more than the 150HP estimate used originally.
