2700 foot pounds of torque Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 18 Feb 2016 08:54:47 In Reply to: Re: OT: Home foundation repair, Les_H, Thu, 18 Feb 2016 06:27:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The installer uses a hydralic motor to power the augers down into the earth. They achieved 2700 ft-lbs of torque at 7 foot depth (really about 11 feet when you add in the 4-foot depth of pit) which translates to 60 kips of bearing support. For the non-engineers 1 kip is equal to 1000 lbs, so each of the 5 piers they installed can support 60,000 pounds of axial load for 300,000 pounds total.
The forman told me he did a job on the North side of Lake St Clair, an area known for many marshes as well as draining & filling activities done decades ago. He had to auger twelve lenghts of pipe onto each pier, 84 feet total length with-out pit depth, to reach soils with suitable bearing capacities.
