I'm not associated with Nomorobo, but heard about it at various websites on scam calls. A year ago, I got so fed up with these calls, decided to give Nomorobo a try, it works great and it's totally free.
You do get one single ring from the phone if the number is on their list and the call would get blocked. You can also contribute numbers to their list. Nomorobo has a few limitations on the phone line type, and they can't block calls from overseas, just take a look at their website.
I use Verizon FIOS for internet and phone, Verizon offers only ten numbers that I can block and ten numbers are pretty useless in the mass of spoofing numbers out there.
