But that's ok, I think you said you were (are?) an engineer and that's what they do.
I live 70 miles from a major metropolitan area and I can receive the digital content over the air. A good starting point is an FCC web site (https://transition.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/dtvmaps/ - https://transition.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/dtvmaps/) that will map where you live and provide a very good estimate of the "over-the-air" reception you can expect. I purchased an inexpensive digital antenna (less than $40) from Amazon that works very well.
I had to keep Comcast for high speed internet. I subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime (I purchase a lot on line).
This is still significantly less expensive than the price I use to pay Comcast. Like you have found, I discovered my bill creeping upward and upward. Even with all the extras I pay for, I ahead and the advantage I have is I get to watch what I want when I want. I know Comcast has the digital DVR, but I found it to cumbersome, and the effort to locate a movie too difficult (compared to the simiplifed search in Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime).
