In the case of the Subaru Forester - I wouldn't be at all surprised if a comparison of fuel consumption at say steady 70 mph shows the 2.0T to have a fuel economy advantage over the 2.5 NA engine. The 2.0T will likely be turning higher rpms than the 2.5 engine, and modern turbo small displacement engines run with the wastegate closed at cruise speeds to apply whatever boost is available to negate the lower compression ratio.
I think I read since the use of lead as an octane booster was banned that the BTUs in a gallon of higher octane and regular are now pretty close.
Lately in the Denver area the difference between regular and premium gas is $ .60 , I feed my 2004 ARC premium but the Hyundai 2.0T gets regular grade except for mountain driving, where using premium is noticeable going up hills.
The biggest reason a lot of turbo engines consume more gas though is as someone may have mentionrd - unless you drive with a really really light throttle the turbo on boost is going to consume a good amount of gas.
