OT: Stihl Trimmer not running correctly Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 18 Aug 2016 17:35:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Last week we received our first appreciable amounts of rain since late May. Naturally the string trimmer has not been used much since Memorial Day either. Humidity has been high for weeks.
Tonight I went to trim the yard and my Stihl trimmer was extremely difficult to start. Once started it never ran strongly. Stalled out four times, then would not restart.
I realized that I have never changed the sparkplug or air filter since buying it, partially because it only runs for a few minutes once or twice each week. Thanks to You-Tube I learned that my symptoms are classic of a plugged spark arrestor.
Dark here now but tomorrow I will be cleaning the spark arrestor using a propane torch and wire brush. I also ordered a Tune-up Kit for my trimmer tonight, a kit which includes a new air filter, new fuel filter, and new Bosch spark plug.
Lots of on-line comments recommending carburetor replacement. Carbs are said to be only $35 for an official Walbro. Does anyone here recommend carb replacement on a string trimmer as routine maintenance? Seems slightly excessive to me but I bought this Stihl expecting it to be the last trimmer I ever need/purchase. I got tired of the routine 5 year replacements of the discount brands.
