My car was damaged last summer in a massive Boston hail shitstorm. As long as the car your family member is looking at doesn't have paint damage along with the dents, it shouldn't be prone to rusting. Check the trim along the doors and windows and trunk lid as well as the seals - if it has any dings that would allow water to pool in or enter places it shouldn't, that could be something to avoid because that could cause rust. If the damage is just limited to main panels with no paint perforation, it might look ugly but that's about it.
If they're planning on fixing it, that could get expensive. My 9-3 convertible was over $4k to repair. Thanks insurance!
