I've done one-way rentals from suburban LA to suburban Boston and back using Hertz Local Edition (HLE).
The cost for six days using a AAA discount was around $280 from North Attleboro, MA to Palmdale, CA for a Camry and around $330 from Palmdale to North Attleboro for a small minivan over 8 days. Both with unlimited mileage.
North Attleboro is around 30 miles south of Boston on I-95 and you can taxi or uber to the MBTA commuter rail in Mansfield or Attleboro to get into Boston itself.
You will not get the same prices if you pick up or drop off at SeaTac or Logan. You need to price several HLEs in the Seattle area because not every one has the same prices on one-way rentals.
Use the Hertz website and play with HLE city pairs in the Seattle area to, say, North Attleboro. (I just know that North Attleboro works for me because it's adjacent to my hometown. Other Boston-area HLEs may be similar in price)
As for abandoning a beater car in Boston, don't. You could donate it to Cars for Starving Hamsters or some other charity or sell it to a junkyard for $100.
