HI re your reference to the Titanic YES the rudder was too small but that was only part of the problem! I read a great book that mentioned the Titanic in another book" weird book titles" = "how to save a large ship from sinking even if torpedoed " (1918)? it was tho, a serious treatise written by a nautical engineer it was quite good ! he had a chapter about the Titanic and explained 1) that the design of the ship was compromised to save weight and cost! the height of the watertight compartments only went up so many decks so when the water topped one it filled up the next and so on the ship was not designed to have so many compartments breached at one time. 2) and this is the main point , there were not sufficient pumps fitted and the pickups to suck up the water were not in the right place ( again as a cost saving ) he was able to accurately calculate the inflow of water and show that if more, just a few, more pumps had been specified and fitted and the water suction points been placed to take water where it was pouring in (they weren't ) the Titanic would have been saved or at least taken DAYS to sink ! I found it amazing that he was able to accurately diagnose exactly what happened more than 70+ years before his theory was confirmed regards,
