Fast charging has definitely been shown to be "worse" for batteries, but I think the science is still out on what that really means on a practical level. Early on, the consensus was "you can't" do it without immediately damaging batteries, but we've definitely reeled that back in to "you shouldn't do it often." It's just as possible that high rate discharging, temperature extremes, or storage is an equal factor in overall battery life. AFAIK, the jury is still out.
It's also important to remember that EV batteries are not "a battery." A Model S for example has 7,100 batteries arranged into 16 modules that form a singular battery pack. Given the availability of hi-amp charging, we can make better decisions about how those battery packs are configured to improve charging rates while maximizing cell life... being able to direct 1/16th of your total rate to each module is a good feature. :)
