Correct on turning them on while away from the area. You don't want to use them while you sleep. Typically, mother would turn it on while away for lunch or the afternoon gatherings. I think it had a run feature that after you turn it it on, it switched off after a period of time.
Used properly, the production of the ozone will improve a living space air quality, and along with keeping surfaces clean, at least there is a chance of reducing contagions. I had a small HEPA filter running all the time to keep air exchange percolating.
Then, there is the humidification or control of it to consider. Optimizing the amount of moisture in the air is important as well, so it's a constant battle. I found mother's HVAC humidistat had not been serviced, it was all plugged up, after harranging the management, and not getting any help from them, I fixed the damn thing myself, and at least during the winter months, the air was better. AC was plugged up too on condensation, so that came later.
Eventually, the airspace improved, but it was managed only through constant vigilance. She liked it a hell of alot better when she could just go out in the garden and grow stuff, no garden at wrinkle city.
