I have co-workers who have done this for years Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Extreme ‘Commute’, EGD ![]() |
They stagger their 4-day weekly work schedules to have a two-day weekend in the middle of their two week period in Michigan, which is book-ended by 4-day weekends at their home base in either New Jersey or South Carolina. One guy's wife does the same thing, except her work place is in Boston. Every other week they see each other for a 4-day weekend in NJ. They have been doing this for nearly 30 years, and other than their frequent extended vacations these alternate 4-day weekends are the only time they see each other! He drives to-from NJ and Michigan, and has negotiated a discounted Motel Rate from the Manager based on his long term need, guaranteed occupancy, and reduced need to have linens/towels/cleaning done only once per week.
Remember, you will also need a car at the work site if you elect to fly. Time for a beater SAAB?
If you return home every weekend then a discovery by a former Brother-In-Law may be helpful. He needed to work at a client's site in Atlanta, commuting from Grand Rapids MI every week. He discovered that air tickets with a two week duration between Monday and Friday were substantially cheaper than those with only a one week duration. So he would buy a GR to ATL ticket leaving on the first of the month and returning on the 12th, AND buy an ATL to GR ticket leaving on the 5th and returning on the 15th.
For each trip he would use half of each ticket. Careful scheduling is necessary for this to work and you may need to purchase a single one-way ticket to help kick off this plan.
