A&W in Canada has gone to paper straws. I can't say that I really like them (have a texture)... maybe reusable straws are a good idea... but then again, that requires some amount of planning ahead!
I do think it is good for these sorts of things to be at least recyclable or biodegradeable. There is too much plastic waste out there already. A biodegradable plastic straw like this looks like a decent idea:
Lots of places offer biodegradable plastic cups, but often cups can be recycled... straws make a lot of sense to manufacture this way imho.
