It was talked about plenty with the demise of Saab several years ago so you might find a lot of info doing some searches.
The skinny of it that became clear is that car manufacturers have no obligation to manufacture parts up to 10 years after.
They only need to manufacture parts in anticipation of how much is going to be used in the next 10 years.
So at year one, they can manufacture a batch of sheet metal roofs that they think will last to 10 years later.
