A superb 4th-generation aircraft. Very fast, maneuverable, good visibility. The ‘E’ version has around a 800 nm combat radius (perfect for Brazil); the ‘C’ version has a 400 nm combat radius which is perfect for Sweden and other smaller countries.
With canards and external stores, it lights up like a Christmas tree on radar, though. Not survivable in many environments anymore. SAAB is working on a stealthy 5th-generation fighter for service later this decade and into the 2030s.
That Brazil is acquiring these aircraft may cause some concern in Argentina which flies a few old A-4 Skyhawks, no match for a Gripen. Will be tough for Argentina to match Brazil as several candidate aircraft contain UK components and the Brits have veto power over who they can be sold to.
