Cutting the cord for non-data intensive Retirees Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
OK, I have had enough of Comcast's incessant rate increases for service upgrades which we do not/cannot use. Their only local competition is AT&T, which is even worse for customer service.
We have one smart TV, one desktop PC, one Laptop, one smart phone, and one wireless router. As I said, we are NOT data intensive users. We currently pay $180/month for their "Base Plan" and all requests for lower prices are answered with a denial of availability.
My current plan is to:
1) Install a digital antenna on a extended chimney mount for local TV. We are ~35 miles from the local broadcast antennas for the major and minor networks.
2) Subscribe to Philo TV for the typical cable channels. I seldom watch sports and we are not addicted to streaming news services (these omissions are the only published drawbacks to Philo). Cost will be $25/month.
3) Delete the cable TV service from Comcast, and subscribe to their second tier (100-200Mbs) internet service. New cost to be ~$40/month.
Total monthly subscription fees will be ~$65/month, a monthly savings of ~$115.
Assuming many others have traveled this same road previously, am I forgetting something?
My wife LOVES having an On Demand viewing service, and apparently Philo provides ON-Demand for up to 72 hours after the initial broadcast without the need to record the program! If you elect to record the program the data will remain on their cloud DVR for one year.
Thanks!
