I agree with almost everything that you said, but I do not think that a 3.0 liter 30 valve V6 is a pure marketing campaign. Audi is trying to compete in a market with Mercedes, BWM, and Lexus where not having a 3.0 liter V6 would be detrimental in that segment for prospective buyers. I think that they feel, people shopping in that category of cars is expecting at least a 200+ hp V6. If you do feel that Audi is just doing that tactic as a markting ploy, then I understand your position, because it could be partially true. Mercedes is using 3-valves per cylinder whereas Audi is using 5-valves per cylinder, "different strokes for different folks."

S4 and A6 2.7T owners have been having a lot of problems with their turbo's in chipped and unchipped form. Unlike Volvo and Saab, Audi has not perfected the use of turbocharged engines. What do buyers of these types of cars want? Would you rather have a 30V 220hp V6 or a max overboost 240hp inline-4? There are plenty of car shoppers today who still are still stigmatized about the reliability of turbo's, even though it is a false supposition as far as Volvo and Saab is concerned. The normally aspirated Audi 2.8 V6 has been fairly reliable so it is not really fair to judge the Audi 3.0 because it is not even out yet.

So, what I gather from reading your response is that you are basically concerned about the reliabilty issue and complexity of the 30V V6. Hypothetically speaking, if the 30V V6 is as reliable as the 2.3 HOT, wouldn't it be a better idea for Audi to use a V6 that is smooth, quiet, and tractable, rather then using a peaky, on/off power 2.3 HOT? BTW, I have driven a Viggen and Aero.
