I put aftermarket pads on a couple of years ago and didn't fit any shims beforehand.
To this day, I still don't have any squeal problems. I'm not saying they don't make any noise, all brakes do from time to time. My point is that shims may or may not help. Really the root cause is the natural frequency of the rotor, caliper, and brake pads. If there isn't adaquate pressure between the pads and rotor some part of the system will resonate, quite often sounding like a church bell on Sunfday morning.
On the flip side, the brakes on the Wife's Volvo sound like a message from the emergency broadcast system. You know that 1 kHz frequency that REALLY gets on your nerves. We have tried everything short of new rotors (I don't feel the need to replace "good" rotors) and nobody makes a Band-Aid big enough to cover that problem.
