In the fall of 1970, I was a young artillery officer at Fort Sill, OK. There was an occasional casual autocross group there, and I took my banana yellow TR-6 over a couple of times to give it a workout.

One day, a guy drove up in a red 250 GTO. I don't know the year, but it was definitely middle-aged by then. It sounded terrible - missing, backfiring, popping, lurching. He took a couple of runs in it and was so disgusted after the last one, he yelled, "Anyone want to buy this POS?" We all laughed, and he said, "No, I'm serious." He pointed to a buddy of his and said, "How much do you have in your checkbook?" The guy said something like $2500 of $3000, I don't remember the exact amount now. The angry Ferrari owner said. "Sold. Write me a check and its yours."

Needless to say, the car changed hands that day right on the spot, and I've always regretted that the balance in my checkbook was three figures, not four, or I might have gambled. One of my friends told me later that the seller was filthy rich, more money than sense. No sh*t.

What would a say 1963 or 1964 250 GTO be worth today in decent condition?
