Energy absorption by the car’s body will depends on the material properties in addition to weight. Lighter is not necessarily better, especially if you get hit by a 3 ton SUV. Even in a single vehicle crash, the car must be designed to absorb energy and transmit as little force and deceleration as possible to the occupants.
