One thing to consider is how to get the car repaired, so having a car that can be fixed easily may be important. This makes domestics attractive, despite the downsides of most of them.
For $7500 to $10K you have a lot of choices, but for ease/cost of service I'd lean toward a domestic or Japanese. If you're looking at an HHR, how about the boxy Scion model? A Toyota Matrix? A Mazda 3 wagon?
These are not Saabs by any means, but are decent cars and can be repaired at a lot of places and you can get parts off the shelf at local parts stores. Tend to be less service intensive, too.
