I realize that on these boards what many people "feel" about CR (based upon some article they read 30 years ago) must be true, and nothing actually printed will change their minds.
For the rest, here's what they did and did not say in their article.
They NEVER said to skip the others and buy the Regal.
They did say "Buick Regal and Volvo S60 are giving their sportier and more prestigious German competition a serious challenge—for less money."
and "If you still think of Buick as a brand only for octogenarians with a taste for whitewall tires and vinyl roof treatments, the Regal will change your mind in one test drive. It’s a thoroughly developed and satisfying midsized sports sedan that’s more reminiscent of an Audi A4 than a softly sprung luxo-barge."

and summarized
Highs: Acceleration, ride, handling, braking, easy-to-use infotainment system
Lows: Rear seat, rear visibility
and
Braking: Excellent performance.
Headlights" Standard halogens lack sufficient intensity and distance. Optional HID lights provide much brighter light and more visibility.
Access: The low roof intrudes.
Visibility: Thick roof pillars limit visibility, especially to the rear. A backup camera is standard.
Cabin storage: Very little for a car of this size.
Head restraints: The rear-center restraint is not tall enough to provide protection.
Child seats
LATCH anchors are included for a center-seat installation.

Plenty of people have posted here that BMW's (and M-B and Audi) are nice cars, but they didn't think that they were worth the extra $'s.
Consumer Reports states that the Regal is serious competition for thousands less, and everyone's head explodes.
Personally, I'd pay thousands more to have the styling of the others over the Buick offerings, the Buick's just don't do it for me, but if I was in the market, I should at least test drive the Buick.
