...it's all about timing. Ok, bad pun. I'll try to explain it, but I usually can't put into words what I understand.
If the a/f mixture ignites before the piston reaches top of its stroke, then you buy a new motor tomorrow. If it ignites too late, while the piston is travelling downwards again, then your blowing power out your exhaust. Kinda like pumping your legs on a swingset. It's gotta be at the right time to get the most out of your swing.
So, the more you advance your timing, the more explosive force is acting on the piston. Then comes this complicated world of cramming huge amounts of air into the motor via that snail-shaped thingy.
Not that I actually know what I'm talking about...Oh well.
