But that's true of everyone

Mobil 1 is simple, IMO: 0W-40 for newish engines with low-friction internals, Truck/SUV or Delvac 1 5W-40 for everything else, unless you need the 15W-50. Leave the thinner stuff for new engines that spec 20-weight oils.
Amsoil has two lines, one is the traditional Group IV oil and one is a Group III that's intended IIRC to be more 'cost-competitive'. The Group IV oil is arguably better than any Mobil 1, the Group III oil not quite as good as M1. But an Amsoil 30-weight oil is a real 30-weight oil, so an engine that needs that viscosity is probably going to last longer with a decent Group III 30-weight than Mobil 1 thin 30-weight.
The super-duper 'German Castrol' is *only* the 0W-30 Syntec and *only* the stuff sold through certain chains - other 0W-30 Syntec is a lesser (still decent, but not as good) spec.
The diesel synthetics (Mobil Delvac 1 and Shell Rotella T Synthetic) are excellent oils, SAE SJ or SL rated for gasoline engines, and their additive packages make them especially well suited for older or older-design engines.
There's a lot of choices out there and some of them are less than obvious.
