Did the Pike's Peak thing yesterday. What a blast. Once you get above the timberline, think of the sheer cliff drops on the Roadrunner cartoons and you get the picture. Cannot believe Per Eklund could possibly hit 100mph, we rarely got above 30 at this stage. 9% grade at this point. The turbo certainly compensated for the lack of air, but the '70 Vette in front of me was gasping. The black smoke we kept seeing indicated to me that the fuel/air mixture was way out of wack as the air got thin.

Found a Saab place right at the entrance to Pike's Peak Highway. (Huh? What highway? It was a dirt road!) Casscade Saab Service. Anybody know 'em? Pics were taken, natch… Being a Sunday, they were closed.

Turbo is holding 22lbs here at altitude (17 is normal at sea level), but MAN the lag just sucks up here! Stomp on the gas pedal in first and it just sits there, sits there, sits there, them WHAM off it goes! I'm sure though that it's just that the air is 1/3 less dense and just takes time to pressurize. At speed you still feel a lag. Really have to anticipate when you think you'll need the power.

Went through Wilkerson and Monarch Passes, unbelievable drives. But the most incredible was a diversion we took to see Black Canyon on the Gunnison River. 2300 ft sheer drop, no guard rails. I had driven to Gunnison (actually Crested Butte Ski Resort) from Colorado Springs about 10 years ago, but had never continued on to the canyon or anywhere else, for that matter. Swam in the Gunnison -- actually a man made lake, Rainbow Lake, I think it was called. COLD COLD COLD!

Very strange drive into Gunnison. (See WASSAAB's thread...) Kept playing cat and mouse with, get this, a Suburban, a Chrysler New Yorker, a Ford minivan of some sort, and of course me. The speed governor in the passenger seat prevented me from getting it on too fast, but I was easily running away from this pack only to have them continuously catch up (after admonitions from my wife, the governor :-P ). Finally did a rest stop in Gunnison and let this weird group pass on down the road.

In Montrose now (don't blink, you'll miss it!).

Independence Pass tomorrow! Stay tuned for the update!

Incredible drives all. This was exactly what the mental health doc ordered. Who needs the SOC this year when you can create your own Road Trip!?

Mike '87 900S, e-mail me your number and I can call you when we blast through Chicagoland sometime Thursday.

Jim M.
