I remember a discussion on this a few months ago. If I remember right, somebody dynoed before and after removal of the cat, and there was 1 hp increase without the cat.

I just bought a dynomax 3" cat, and you can see light through the catalyst core. It's basically a straight-through design. The guy at the parts store looked at the cat and then recommended I race my car, without actually having seen the car. It was kind of funny, but the point is that the cat really looks like it wouldn't cause any flow restriction.

The comment about feeling OK about removing the cat because you now use less fuel is "new math." Compared to the OEM cat, going cat-less might improve fuel economy by a mpg or so, but emissions are substantially increased. Compared to a free-flow cat, I doubt the fuel economy will improve. The reality is that, with the new wide-open cats available, you don't have to sacrifice performance.
