Conditions: COLD! 45 and fell to 35 degrees, with a decent breeze kicking to a full on wind at times. No humidity to speak of. They were trying to heat the track with a blowtorch by the end of the night. Not a good sign.

Cars: Two classes: Pro Street and Super Street. I, and 85SLED were in the latter (= 13.00s or slower)

Most of the competition was Firebirds and Mustangs, with a few riced out Civics and a cleanly done Eclipse GSX. One guy had the plate "CEO STYL" on his 2000 330 BMW. 330? Ok sir?

The Pro Street class was amazing, and we saw new track records for speed and 1/4 time (same car) for this class. Some how this guy could hook up when everyone else was having major problems. 7.71 @ 181 mph. Wow. Lots of guys running 9s and 10s.

Anyway, traffic getting there sucked, but not terrible. We got there at about 7, and were on the track by 7:30.

1st Run: Decent launch, but grip was impossible given the near frozen pavement. Still managed to pull off the fastest time for me, ever:

15.233 @ 95.39 mph; RT: .579 (pro style, baby!)

2nd run: Against 85SLED (in the 2 door): He had problems hooking up, and popped out of first twice. I won, but not really.

Crappy launch for me, bad hook up, but still got some decent speed:

15.263 @ 95.21 mph; RT: .437 (red light, d'oh)

3rd run: Even more slipping problems. Set tires to 20 psi to get some help, but that did not do it.

15.327 @ 95.15 mph, RT: .580 (not bad, again!)

Then comes bracket racing:

I dial the car in for a 15.20 (feeling like I know how to handle the track conditions, finally). In brackets, you run against anything, and my race was a case in point. I ran against a Chevette dialed in at 19.70! This means that he gets a 4.5 second head start and that I have to catch him before he reaches the finish while not busting out of my bracket. I allowed a friend, Michael Gottlieb to ride with me (to perhaps balance out the weight on the front end, and for his entertainment!) The Shoveit busted his bracket, so my crappy run that was not even close to a 15.2 did not matter. 15.552 @ 92.15 (my consistency is gone , d'oh)

That put me into the second round, and I went up against a Caprice dialed in to 14.7 (modified unit). I had yet another crappy launch, and ran yet another 15.555 @ 92 mph (and again, with Mike in the car) I guess the added weight hurt more than it helped, but he had fun!) Caprice about nailed his bracket, so I'm out.

What I leanred: #1: no matter how good of a track it is, when it is that cold, hooking up is a freakin' challenge. #2: I can now do burnouts. Not a good idea, but fun anyway. this is why: #3: I need new tires! These Yokos have barely survived this year, through 4 drag race events and 2 auto crosses, they are toast.

We left the track at midnight, into the wilderness that is Southern MD. A 2001 GT Mustang (modified, I dunno. I would guess so, but who knows) starts dicking with me. I, having just pumped 104 octane gas straight into the tank, figure, why waste the octane. So I downshift and pull on him pretty easily. Me thinks he backed off. We go at it several times, and sometimes he pulls me, depending on if I get into 4th before I hear him drop it down. Most of the time, I am pulling him, especially over 110 mph; I could open up a car or two on him.

Last run: I pull next to him at 60 mph and we roll at the same speed for 10 seconds. I hold my hand up in the window and count 1 - 2 - 3 with my fingers. We both shift and floor it... and I beat him! I pulled on him pretty easily. He seemed determined to win against me, but is probably very upset that he just could not catch up. The 104 gas helped me hit 24 psi solid.

On the way home: Eric's head gasket blows internally. I'll let him post about that, but we waited in a parking lot for 2 hours while USAA tried to find us someone to tow him home. They never did... and we did not get home until 3 am. I am very tired.

Hopefully Eric will share his experience here, too...
