I know that this has been discussed at length, but with conflicting opinions. I have heard the "torque kills trannies" arguments and all of that other stuff, but then I hear of Swedish 9000 ZF auto's with well over 300hp and at least that much torque! Is there something that can be added that we don't know of, or are the dreaded ZF's not so bad? I have one in my 95' with almost 285k! It has NEVER been serviced!! Not even a governor seal or valve spring. Just fluid and filter each 30k. It has been running high boost(14psi) for at least the last 100k. The car is exclusively a highway machine, but it does get worked fairly hard, and we get some pretty high outside temps here in the summer(southern NC.& SC.) I know that I have been lucky with my auto, in fact, I bought the car cheap with the argument that the tranny would be dead soon(little did I know!)
I would like to keep the auto for the convenience of traffic down here, but I also want to put the boost to this car. I have a T-25/28 turbo in the works, and I would like to get the 300hp SQR s/w from Bo Engstrom, and of course, the obligatory 3" exhaust. I have a 5-speed ready for a conversion, but I have actually grown to enjoy the auto while I am working(over 50k miles per year), plus all of the other Saab projects I have are 5-speeds, it's kind of nice to take a break from it. Any advice? Anyone? TIA!
