Can trans last 80 km without any oil?????

I remember seeing my trans on the shop floor with the dipstick cover and also the cover just under the flywheel removed which obviously drained all the oil. The shop did forget to refill the trans and I unsuspecting drove it approx 80 km ( 48 miles) home. I filled the trans with new dino and it took a full 3 ltrs. I drove it to a local do it yourself wash and power washed the engine/trans. The trans seemes to be OK and I after driving it again tomorrow will listen for any whinning and also inspect to see if it has any oil leaks. Why did my trans not self destruct after running 80 km without oil???
