increasing the total area of the delivery pipe interior would require that the Turbo physically pass/compress a higher total volume in a trasient situation. Air is like a 3 dimensional train with loose connections between the cars, so the molecules are relatively loosly packed compared to say hydraulic oil, so when there's starting and stopping in an increased absolute area there HAS to be a coresponding increase in the amount of total area between the individual components that make-up that air---which would directly introduce some decreased level in total system transient response, or actually introduce lag at some level. Same case when an intercooler is enlarged, which is why I asked because I'm planning on an intercooler upgrade; a friend and I were discussing exactly that issue about a month ago and never came to a conclusion. I was curious if you could notice it in real application.
At some point, increaseing the interior size of the post-turbo intake absoultely without a doubt will have a noticeable negative impact on system throttle response, that might be pretty big though.
I would be fun to hook-up a real mondo-huge intercooler setup with precise and repeatable flow control and the total volume of an ice chest or bigger. Do a bunch of transient runs with some way to quantify response time and take a little bit of volume away each run. That might give a curve for a rough equation without a whole bunch of effort and would also zero-out the mechanicl factors. I wonder if it's already been done...
On a different note, you could even time between the throttle and tailpipe on a car and develope a relative scale for toatl responses between particular rpm's. People could talk about that throttle response number similar to the way they talk drag coefficients, skid pad Gs, 0-60s,...
