Man, if I could avoid tax by paying cash, I'd pay cash all the time!

Seriously, I have never known a shop to not provide a receipt/work order detailing all the labor performed and parts used, regardless of the method of payment, even for something so simple/inexpensive as an oil change or free brake inspection. It sounds like your shop did quite a lot of work to you car, so I cannot believe they didn't think it needed a receipt! What kind of shop is this? In any case, can I assume the work was done just a short while ago, say less than a few months? If so, despite not having paperwork, I would say your recourse is to go speak with the shop manager and tell him that such and such were not done properly and you want those jobs redone properly. I assume the shop remembers who you are! I think if the work was done in the very recent past, say within a few weeks, you DO have legal recourse, though I can't say how expensive it might be. Now keep in mind that I'm not a lawyer, though I do not play one on TV. However, I would say that there is always an implied warranty whenever you have work done on your vehicle. Now it may be short, a month or a few months, but when you go in and have a SPECIFIC repair done on your car, and then have a failure of that repair within such a short period of time, it's safe to say it was not done properly. ANY decent shop will honor even an implied warranty, in my experience. If they flat out deny there is any warranty whatsoever or, because you have no receipt, they didn't even work on your car, well... then it's time to either (a) figure out how much time and effort and money you want to fix on getting this incompetent shop to re-repair your car, or (b) chalk it up to a bad experience and find an honest shop which does great work and stands behind it. Most shops I have dealt with have a one year/12,000 mile warranty on all work on new parts, not implied, but actually written, which seems reasonable to me, although of course most repairs you expect to last far longer than that.

I still don't get the no tax thing though - it's almost as if this repair was done under the table? Did you pay significantly less than their normal repair fees for all this work?
