I have Intrax/bilsteins on my SPG, and the ride is comparable to an earthquake over rougher roads, but quite smooth over fresh asphalt.
Turning the damping up on the shocks will make the car less bouncy as the shocks will not be able to compress/rebound as quickly, alleviating bounce. This will however make the ride more harsh.
Turning the damping down will return a certain measure of body control to the springs, which will result in the car bouncing more.
Find a tolerable ride comfort, then start tweaking the shocks for cornering balance. Too bad you have to remove the rears.
