In addition to what has been posted, I can add a classic example of the inherent problem with FWD taken from the Carl Lopez book "Going Faster"
A tire only has a certain amount of grip it can apply to the road - (think of the total grip as a pie), this grip can be used to handle acceleration, braking, and cornering forces, but the grip used for all forces combined can still only add up to one full pie.
In all cars, the braking and cornering forces will have to share the front wheels' grip - this is why you can stop faster in a stright line than you can while turning.
In a FWD car however, the front wheels must share their pie between the cornering and accelerating forces, meaning that if all other factors are equal, a front wheel drive car simply is not capable of cornering levels on par with a rear wheel drive car *again, all other factors being equal*
The rear wheel drive car allows its front wheels to dedicate all of their grip pie forces to cornering while leaving the rear wheels to focus on putting down the power
