I had the same problem on my '88 9000T. You are right - the
problem will eventually destroy the sheet metal where the door
closer is anchored to the car body.

Believe it or not, it's not a problem of binding due to loss of
lubrication. Apparently, the problem is that the closer gets loose, and
the action of opening and closing the door with all of that slop in the
closer assembly starts to bend the sheet metal under the closer, on
the body. On mine, the combination of these forces actually resulted
in shearing off the the 'cotter' pin that holds the closer's two parts
together.

I, too had a long look at this thing. Just couldn't figure it out. One of
the experienced Saab techs at the local dealership knew exactly what
to do - in fact, there is a Saab factory bulletin on these door
problems. There is a reinforcement procedure for the sheet metal on
the car body, and a different way of securing the whole thing after
it's been properly tightened. The tech had done lots of these over the
years, it turns out. The whole mess cost me about $50, but I had to
wait a couple days for the parts kit. Problem solved.
