Intercooler

since we all know that the original intercooler of the classic saab 
900 turbo is not very efficient, I would like to equip my car with a 
larger one. I know that there is an excellent chargecooler from 
Abbott, but I do not want to spend that much money (although if I 
had it I probably would). My father owned a '91 9000 2.3 Turbo S. I 
allways believed that this car had a large intercooler just infront of 
the radiator so I went to a junkyard to look at a 9000 intercooler 
and whether it would fit into the classic 900. To my surprise they 
showed me an intercooler which was not much bigger than the 
original one. I know that there were different intercoolers depending 
on the year the 9000's were build (but same in 2.0 and 2.3).
My question is: Has anyone fitted a larger intercooler into the 
classic 900? Does another Saab intercooler fit (what are the 
differences between the different 9000 intercoolers)? What about 
the Volvo turbo intercoolers (e.g. 740 Turbo). There also was an 
article about a Renault Fuego intercooler conversion in NINES but I 
do not have that issue. What about that? Any comments are 
appreciated.
