Ignition

Until recently, I was one of two people who has ever driven my '86 SAAB
900. We have always inserted and removed the key while the gear shift
(manual) has been left in reverse. My car manual tells me it must be in
reverse to remove the key.
I had to make an emergency stop and a non-SAAB repair station worked on my
car. I told them repeatedly how to insert and remove the key. The word
never got passed down to the technician and so upon my return, I discovered
that the key was taken out improperly. The car began to have ignition
problems immediately that grew progressively worse (chimes at odd times;
not starting without a lot of fiddling) until a month and a half later, it
finally would not start ever. No turnover, nothing. The key actually would
not even go in. Is it possible that this one time messed up my ignition or
something related? Is there documentation to back it up if so? I need to
know soon.
Thanks zillions - Cynthia
