Jules wrote of a bad experience at Fred Beans' in Doylestown PA

I haven't ever been there for sales or service, but I do know that
they took over the Saab franchise from Werner Motors of Lansdale
(which also sold V*lv*s). That continued a trend of larger
multi-brand dealerships replacing smaller dealers. In particular,
Victor Saab of Abington was bought out by The Great Britains of
Willow Grove about five years ago. As you might guess from the name,
Britains is much more interested in selling Land Rovers and Jaguars.
Saab is an afterthought, not the least of which is because of the
obscene profits dealers are making off Land Rovers. Even used BMWs
get more attention from these guys than Saabs do.

Britains brought in some but not all of the Victor personnel, and
reassigned some of them (the service consultant I dealt with now is
in the parts department and doesn't seem too happy there). Our Saabs
were met with too much indifference there, which at dealer prices is
inexcusable, so we now deal with an independent mechanic, Larry
Weiss, at Elkins Park Auto Works (215-635-1448) for most of our work,
and we go all the way to Clews and Strawbridge in Paoli for 30,000
mile major services and other big jobs. Larry drives a classic 900
himself, so he's aware of the vagaries of Saabs. I've had mixed
experiences with him--anyone who wants details can e-mail me.

Clews is the only Saab specialist dealer left in the greater
Philadelphia area, and thus the only dealer not letting their Saab
franchise rot in favor of more profitable makes.

I don't know what the General is thinking, but they need to pay
attention to this so that their dealers don't undo all the work
they're doing to revitalize the brand.
