Leaky Heater Matrix

The leak on my 9000 heater matrix has been steadily getting worse, and
recently even more so since I've added water wetter (lower surface tension=
better at finding leaks!). Before biting the bullet and replacing the
matrix, I was considering trying one of the proprietary coolant system leak
stopping additives. Has anybody tried this route and if so, was it
successful? Moreover, are there any adverse effects on the cooling ability?
I run a modified engine, and so effective cooling, especially round the
head, is very important (hence the reason for adding water wetter, to reduce
localised boiling)

Thanks
