5th Gear Difficulty

My 9000cs has 80K miles on it and over the past 2-3 months, I've noticed
that shifting from 4 to 5th gear is getting more difficult, but only on
occasion. It feels as if something is loose and getting in the way. Most
of the time, when this occurs, simply giggling the shift lever will
allow it to slip into place.

On a very rare occasion, it simply will not go in to 5th - this is cured
by shifting back to 4th, then back up into 5th. When this type of
blockage occurs, no matter how hard I force the gear shift, it won't go
into 5th.

What are some potential causes of this sort of problem? Are there any
generic/chronic problems with this model & type of transmission with
'standard' fixes? Something I could do myself?

BTW, there is no grinding sound of any sort when this happens, clutch is
fully depressed, clutch fluid is topped off, and no correlation to
temperature is observed.

Thanks for your thoughts and help.

John
