Temperature Sensor

I have an odd problem with my temp sensor in my 1988 900S. Sometimes, and it
seems to be more often than not now, the temp gauge in my car pegs all the
way up. And no it isn't the engine actually being hot, something is wrong
with the sensor in the engine. I found the sensor, which is located on the
front of the engine near the distributor. It looks like it screws in and a
single wire is attached with a 0.187" fast-on type lug. If you remove the
wire the temp gauge drops to "zero", same if you ground it to the
engine.

I haven't had time to look at it yet in more detail, but a few questions.

1) Is this simply a variable resistor type sensor? Or is it something more?
Anyone have a clue of how it works so I can get a meter on it to see what it
is doing?

2) If the sensor is bad, does anyone have any clue of what the part number is
or what this is called, or if I can even buy one somewhere?

3) What does it plug into? In other words, to replace it, can I simply
unscrew it and replace it or do I need to first drain the engine oil or the
coolant?

My other thought is it might simply be bad wiring somewhere. I have to
investigate that further. My reasoning is that grounding the wire drops the
gauge to zero and so does disconnecting it, so the fault it probably not an
loose connection or a short a grounded point (a frayed wire touching the body
of the car or the engine) or else I would see the gauge drop, not peg at the
highest. So maybe the wire is shorting to a +12V point somewhere or there
really is something odd about the sensor. But the sensor can not be very
complicated since it only has a single wire (with the body of the sensor, I
am assuming, being the ground).

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, tips on where to look, other than tracing
back the wiring, what part number is the sensor, where to get one, and
anything I need to know about changing it, I would be grateful.

Patrick
