When the theft protection system in the radio is working as designed, it has
the following features:

Security code must be entered after each time the power to the unit is
interrupted.

If an incorrect code is entered, holding the BAND button for 5 seconds will
clear it and give you another opportunity to enter the correct code.

If you enter an incorrect code three times in a row, the BAND button will no
longer make the bad code disappear. At this point, you must leave the radio
ON (bad code displayed and annoying beeping noise going on) for SIXTY
MINUTES.

After this sixty minute waiting period, the BAND button can once again be
used to make the bad code go away. But beware, you have only one chance to
enter the correct code now. If you enter an incorrect code again at this
point, it will take another 60-minute penalty period to enable the
BAND-clear procedure.

Now, when these radios (1992-1994 9000, 1992-1993 900, 1994 900 convertible)
get old, they tend to *forget* their code from time to time for no logical
reason. If you have the correct code on-hand, it can be reentered and
operation can be restored.

As time goes on, the code forgetting becomes more frequent. Then one day,
the correct code will not be accepted. The radio will just continues asking
for it after you have entered it, basically ignoring your entry.

At this point, you can enter the correct code many times over and over
again, and at some point it might be accepted.

Alternatively, you may intentionally invoke the 60-minute bad-code time-out
(by entering a bogus code followed by a BAND-clear three times in a row).
After the 60-minutes are up, a single BAND-clear and correct code entry
should work.

When the multi-entry (persuasion) and the intentional 60-minute time-out
tricks stop working, you can either toss the radio out of the window of a
tall building, or see a SAAB dealer about sending it to Clarion for service
(which costs nearly as much as a nice new aftermarket radio/CD unit). I
personally prefer the first option...
