2006 New Models

The January 27 edition of AutoWeek reports that a newly planned
high-volume 9-2 compact is on the fast track. Tentatively
scheduled as a 2006 model, the 9-2 lineup will include a
sportwagon, plus three- and five-door hatchbacks similar in size to
the Ford Focus and VW Golf. The real surprise is the plan for Saab
to sign a deal in March with Subaru holding company Fuji Heavy
Industries to build a Subaru Impreza-like car with a boxer-four
engine and tag it as the 9-2.

This move is considered crucial to Saab's recovery plan. Saab
boss, Peter Augustsson said, 'It's time for Saab to quickly and
effectively expand its range.'

Meanwhile, the shelved plans for the full-size Saab 9-7
sport/activity vehicle based on a Cadillac architecture is back in
action. It is expected to launch in 2006 and have GM V6 and V8
powerplants.

It also looks like more production capacity outside of Sweden will
be necessary. The 9-7 may be built in Lansing, MI. AutoWeek also
hints that these new plans might also allow Saab to return to the
world rallying scene with the four-wheel-drive 9-2.
