It is not necessary to remove the fascia at all. Just pull out the cassette
and CD units using standard 2-prong DIN-radio removal tools, then tweak a
few metal tabs to get the metal slides out of the dash, and just to make
things a little easier, pop out the bottom-most plastic console cubby.

Using wire nuts in an automobile is very bad practice. Outside of North
America, wire nuts aren't even acceptable in house wiring. The automotive
wiring standard is to use crimped connectors. If you go this route, be sure
to use a suitable crimping tool. I have a strong personal preference for
soldering wires together, and insulating them with heat-shrink tubing, but
this might be a little too hard-core. If soldering and crimping don't
interest you, look at some european screw-type insulated terminals for
general wire-splicing needs, available at Radio Shack in small and large
versions, in strips of 8 or 12:

Crutchfield sells wiring harness connectors that plug in directly into your
SAAB's radio harness plugs, so that you don't need to cut off those plugs.
If you have to cut the car's plugs off, don't lose any sleep over it.

Not sure, but non-fading sounds like pre-amp. These might be for sending
the audio signal to an external amplifier.

> Are there male RCA speaker connectors

No. The speaker connections live in one of the two SAAB harness plugs, call
it the Speaker Plug*. The other plug, call it the Power Plug, contains +30
(constant live), +15 or +X (switched live), ground, illumination/dimmer
(brown/white wire), antenna extend/retract signal wire. On the SAAB wiring
schematics, the Power Plug is labelled H10-4.

*Up to and including model-year 1991, the SAAB-Clarion systems got all eight
speaker wires hooked up through the single Speaker Plug. In the schematic
below, this plug is labelled H10-5.

1992-1994 SAAB-Clarion systems featured a separate rear-speaker amplifier
(component number 351), which as I mentioned earlier, lives under the
passenger seat in the 9000.

In these cars, the Speaker Plug (H10-5) only contains four of the eight
speaker wires, and they are for the front speakers only. The rear speaker
wires go to the separate amplifier directly. The communication between the
Clarion head unit and the separate amplifier is via a proprietary 6-wire
interface cable. If you want to use only head-unit amplification, the
easiest thing to do might be to run four new speaker wires (under the
carpet) from the amplifier location to the vicinity of the new head unit in
the dash. Alternatively, you could try to figure out how to retain the
stock Clarion amplifier for the rear speakers, by sending it a pre-amp audio
signal and a turn-on/power wire from your new head unit. I can't help you
with details on the latter.

Note that even though the audio system schematics referenced above are for
900 models, 9000 audio systems for these model-years are identical.
