Radiator Cooling Fan Resistor Source

Hi folks:
Just diagnosed why the cooling fan would not come on in my 93 9000 CD. The
low speed cooling fan resistor mounted on the shroud of the radiator fan
measured 23Meg! Saab wanted $168 USD (Ouch!). The p/n of the original
resistor is 50WMD20 which is the exact p/n for NTE brand resistor, NTE
50WMD20 (www.nteinc.com). Ordered from Arcade Electronics for $6 USD + $6
shipping (no minimum order necessary!), http://www.arcade-electronics.com/

Just drill out the rivets holding the old one, cut wires on each end, drop in
new one, re-rivet and crimp (don't solder - it will melt because of the
current in the circuit)the wires on with butt-splices.

An easy way to diagnose this problem besides measuring the resistor is to
open the relay box located under the hood, drivers side, and locate the
'cooling fan' relay. Remove the relay and carefully pry off the top of the
plastic case. Reinsert the relay, and with the insulated end of a small
screwdriver or similar device, manually close the relay contact. The fan
should run. If it does not, most likely it is the resistor. You can also
check the high speed fan portion of the circuit in a similar way. BTW, the
Haynes manual states that turning on the A/C will engage the low speed
fan....errr NOT! My 93 9000 never operated that way since I drove it out of
the showroom. Also, the Haynes manual is kinda useless if your trying to
discover the circuit and wiring diagram for a 2-speed fan system. It
basically says this is the circuit for a 1 speed, but you may have a 2
speed.....without any further details.

What clued me in to something wrong electrically as opposed to mechanically
was the fact that the high speed fan fuse was blown.

Hope this helps somebody in the future.
John
