2 Stroke Mystery
Posted by John Knight - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3? (more from John Knight - http://saabnet.com/tsn/forms/e.php3?) on Thu, 12 Feb 2004 13:19:16

I recently bought a rebuilt two stroke engine from Chip Lamb for my 1966 96.
It was not the one in my car. That's another story. Everything else in the
engine compartment was either rebuilt then or just prior to the purchase. I
had the engine and rebuilt parts put in here by a mechanic who has owned two
strokes and had his own automotive repair shop for years. Here's the
problem, the car starts up immediately and runs smooth until it heats up. At
that point it backfires through the carbs and then I lose power and end up
running on one cylinder. Needless to say, it's all I can do to get it home.
My mechanic suspects that the seals in the crank are bad allowing leakage
between the cylinders. We have checked and re-checked timing, firing order,
fuel mixture etc. to no avail. I guess my next step is to bull the engine,
take the bottom off, and see what's going on. Any ideas? I have had the car
ten years and hope I don't have to let her go.
