Comparison of Thermostat housings
Comparison shot of B engine thermostat housings. The one on the left is the late design, introduced in 1977 (approximately). It requires a three-way thermostat. The one on the right is the original Saab design.

Early internal view
Internal view of the early housing. Note the large, wide, open space, duplicated on the head side. This has a 3 way thermostat installed, but that is not needed.

Late Internal View
Internal view of the late housing. Note the split. When the thermostat opens all the way, water can't pass back to the head, and must go to the radiator. Note that this has the wrong thermostat that is not a 3-way!
