It turned out to be the seal around the shift selector shaft coming out of the transmission. The hardest part of replacing it was that the rod from the shifter had to be separated from the selector shaft. They are joined by a taper pin that had frozen into place and had to be drilled out. Once they are separated, the seal can be pried off and a new one tapped into place easily. Good luck, John
