And if you leave a window or sunroof slightly open, why not put a big
neon-orange sign on the window screaming "COME'N'GET IT!". One always
has the option of either locking & securing the car, or not.

Possible, of course, but a pain in the arse for the owner who wants to
pop the trunk without restarting the car (electric windows are bad
enough in this respect). The primary targets for thieves are in the
dash and cabin, not the trunk.
