i had the same problem w/my ;85 900S, and this is what i found out... by the by, do not tell your service shop you did this... i ended troubleshooting the motor, it was all right... what i found was that the wiring that runs through to the engine compartment ( the small area between the fender and the side a'firewall" ) had frayed and corroded... it is a tight doing, but all you need to do is resplice the bad area and you are done...
